Honda Civic 2013

The Honda Civic is a line of subcompact and subsequently compact cars made and manufactured by Honda. The Civic, along with the Accord and Prelude, comprised Honda's vehicles sold in North America until the 1990s, when the model lineup was expanded. Having gone through several generational changes, the Civic has become larger and more upmarket, and it currently slots between the Fit and Accord.

International marketing and platform derivatives

While the Civic is sold in largely the same form worldwide, differences in the name of the models exist between markets. In Japan, the hatchback Civic is just called "Civic" while the sedan model was called the (Japanese: Civic Ferio) during the fifth to seventh generations. The sixth-generation sedan was also sold as the Integra SJ. In Europe and the United States, "Civic" generically refers to any model, though in Europe the coupe is branded the "Civic Coupe". A four-door station wagon model called the Civic Shuttle (also Civic Pro in Japan) was available from 1984 until 1991 (this brand name would later be revived for the mid-1990s Honda Shuttle people carrier, known in some markets as the Honda Stream). In South Africa, the sedan (the only model sold there until the 1996 launch of the sixth generation sedan and hatch) was known as the Ballade.

Other models have been built on the Civic platform, including Prelude, Ballade, CR-X, Quint, Concerto, Domani, CR-X Del Sol, Integra, and CR-V.

Also, at various times, the Civic or Civic-derived models have been sold by marques other than Honda – for example, Rover sold the 200, 400 and 45, each of which were Civic-based at some point (first 200s were the second generation Ballade; from 1990 the 200 and 400 were based on the Concerto; the 400 was the 1995 Domani), as was their predecessor, the Triumph Acclaim, based on the first Honda Ballade.

 The Honda Domani, an upscale model based on the Civic, was sold as the Isuzu Gemini in Japan (1992–2000), and confusingly the 5-door Domani was sold as the Honda Civic (along with the "real" hatchback and sedan Civics) in Europe from 1995 to 2000. In Thailand, the sixth generation Civic was available as the four-door Isuzu Vertex. The sixth-generation station wagon was sold as the Honda Orthia, with the Partner as the downmarket commercial variant. The seventh generation minivan model is called the Honda Stream. In Canada, the sixth and seventh generation Civics were mildly redesigned to create the Acura EL until the advent of the eight generation Civic, which was used to create the Acura CSX, which was designed in Canada. Honda Japan adopted the CSX styling for the Civic in its home country.

The Honda Civic is the one of the world's most successful compact car nameplates, up there with the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. Today, the 2013 Honda Civic lineup includes a sedan and a coupe, though in the past it's also included hatchback and wagon models.

The Civic also runs the gamut from efficient to sporty trim, from basic versions to sporty Civic Si, frugal Civic Hybrid, and even luxurious Civic EX variants.

Vehicles that have been cross-shopped with the Civic in recent model years include the Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra, but among them the front-wheel-drive Civic has one of the most consistent, enviable reputations for reliability and longevity and has for most of its time been one of the more enjoyable small cars to drive.

The Civic first came to the U.S. in the early 1970s. And while in non-Rust Belt states there are no doubt many running examples of Honda Civic models dating back to the '70s and '80s, the 1990s-era Civics are currently the most common older Civic models still widely in circulation. These Civics mostly have 1.5- and 1.6-liter engines of various outputs; Honda's VTEC system was phased into the Civic line back in 1992 and allowed the model to be both faster and more fuel-efficient than many other small-car models in that era. It was also one of the few inexpensive small cars to have an independent rear suspension, giving it uncompromised ride and handling traits.

The Civic that was sold from 2001 through 2005 was only sold as a rather drab sedan in the U.S.—except for the sporty Si model—but what it didn't win in style it did in all-around performance, with good fuel economy as well, and a roomy interior. Some enthusiasts weren't thrilled with the change to a strut front suspension. This generation did mark the debut of a Civic Hybrid model, borrowing the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system that had made its debut in the earlier Insight coupe.

With radically different, aerodynamically optimized exterior styling and a completely reconceived twin-level instrument-panel design, the Civic that was offered from 2006 to 2011 came in sleek coupe or sedan variants, with a 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine on most (DX, LX, EX, and EX-L models). The Civic Hybrid model returned, with a CVT transmission and 110-hp mild-hybrid system good for an EPA 40 mpg city, 45 highway, and a natural-gas-fueled GX model is also on offer. This time around, the Civic Si model includes an excellent 197-horsepower, 2.0-liter four and six-speed manual gearbox. Other versions have a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic. Again, the Civic is praised for its fuel economy and peppy driving feel with nearly any of its variants, but backseat headroom is limited because of the sloping roofline.

And while many think of the Civic as solely a basic, no-frills vehicle, in recent years top-of-the-line Civic EX models got even more lux, with leather upholstery, heated seats, and even a navigation system.

This generation of the Civic looks and drives much like the previous-generation model, but with a toned-down, more conservative look inside and out. Its driving experience is also far from youthful and eager, though a somewhat softer suspension brought more comfort and refinement. Base prices have remained very low, at around $16k for the DX, but Bluetooth and satellite radio were the exclusive domain of the top-of-the-line EX and EX-L. Civic Si models are upgraded to a new 2.4-liter four, while Hybrid models now achieve an EPA-rated 44 mpg.

Honda rushed a substantially different version of the Civic, which arrives for 2013. More than a typical mid-cycle refresh, the 2013 Honda Civic gets a somewhat different look modeled after the new Accord, plus a much-expanded feature set, including standard Bluetooth, text-message functionality, Pandora integration, and a rear-view camera system—all standard—while optional navigation systems have been upgraded with subscription-free FM-based traffic info. Most importantly, the cabin has been given new materials, as well as extra noise insulation. Civic Hybrids also get new standard active safety, with Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
