The NBA announced the new identity of the former New Orleans Hornets Thursday. The Hornets nickname is retiring in favor of the Pelicans. Louisiana being the Pelican State, the team is trying to more closely identify with their home.
According to ESPN, there was a small campaign, at one point, to rename the team the New Orleans Jazz. That was the name of New Orleans' original NBA franchise, which currently resides in Utah. The Utah Jazz had no intention of letting the name go, though. Which makes little sense, considering Utah isn't really known for jazz music, at all.
The Pelicans' logo has a bit of hometown flavor, with the lettering being reminiscent of street signs in the French Quarter, and their new colors are blue, gold, and red. The team will first take the court as the Pelicans at the beginning of the 2013-2014 season.
